Faculty
Katherine Culver came to us from another classical Christian school. She was an honor student at Methodist University earning a degree in elementary education. Mrs. Culver and her husband William worship at Potomac Hills Presbyterian Church in Leesburg. They have one daughter who is an infant.
Bethany Heerema studied at Pensacola Christian College earning a history degree and a master’s in interpretive speech. Miss Heerema was selected to teach speech to over 200 undergraduates. She belongs to Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Vienna. Reading Doug Wilson’s Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning and observing a school her old church in New England started, she became a fan of classical Christian schooling.
Ashleigh Eagy was a Presidential Scholar and earned her B.S. in Physics from George Mason University. She and her husband, Spencer, attend Grace Community Church in Ashburn. Mrs. Eagy teaches Calculus, Algebra I, and other courses in our junior high and high school.
Michael Murphy, an alumnus of Oak Hill Christian School, serves as an assistant teacher while he is working on his bachelor’s degree. He has traveled to Saltillo and elsewhere in Mexico to help with missions as well as to Shanghai where he spent the last few summers working as an English teacher. On Saturdays Michael studies Mandarin, which he already speaks quite well. He is an active member in his church, Capital Baptist of Annandale, where he helps with drama and other activities.
Margaret St.Jean joined us after spending a number of years homeschooling her seven children and leading discussion groups for students studying Great Books, British, world, and American literature. She earned an English degree at Washington College where she was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society as well as a master’s in liberal arts from St. John’s College, Annapolis. She belongs to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Warrenton.
Carl Thoburn teaches high school Algebra II and Geometry. Mr. Thoburn is an alumnus of The Ohio State University and taught geometry and math for over 30 years at Washington and Lee High School and elsewhere in Arlington County Public Schools. He is a member of Christian Fellowship Church in Ashburn.
Robert Thoburn Jr., Headmaster teaches high school Latin. Mr. Thoburn loves history and economics and studied at Grove City College and earned a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University in 1990. Married to Sheila, he is a member of the Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Warrenton where he serves on the vestry. Mr. Thoburn is the father of five sons and four daughters.
Sheila Thoburn serves as Director of Instruction responsible for planning and coordinating curriculum at Oak Hill. She and Robert are the parents of two Oak Hill alumni, both of whom attend New Saint Andrews College as well four current Oak Hill students. Heidi Wethered homeschooled her two daughters, one of whom attends Geneva College. She is married to Bennett Wethered who pastors Dayspring Orthodox Presbyterian Church in New Baltimore, Virginia. Mrs. Wethered earned two bachelor’s and a master’s degree from McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland.
Hannah White teaches Omnibus (literature/writing) and junior and senior thesis. The daughter of a PCA pastor, she was homeschooled through high school and went on to graduate from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. She began as an instructor at Oak Hill five years ago and now teaches our students online from her new home in Bluefield, West Virginia. She is married to Dr. Jonathan White and has one son. She is usually found with a caffeinated beverage, a bad habit she developed in college, and always has a funny story to tell.
Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten
Mirna Ayllon first came to us in the fall of 2009. She works as an assistant and has one daughter attending Oak Hill. Mrs. Ayllon holds two degrees in engineering and science.
Dora Crow joined our staff in 2011 teaching Junior Kindergarten. She has a son attending college as well as a daughter in Junior High at Oak Hill. Mrs. Crow attends Fairfax Baptist Temple. She worked for four years at her church school and for many years as a legal assistant. Mrs. Crow speaks fluent Spanish.
Carrie Fluegge works as an assistant and teaches art and music. Miss Fluegge attends Temple Baptist Church in Herndon and is one of three Fluegges who has worked at Oak Hill.
Sarah Fluegge was homeschooled by her parents and taught English for four years while living in Moscow, Russia. She has spent summers and other times traveling the countryside of various European states including Austria and Lichtenstein.
Laura Hickman serves as an assistant and has four children attending Oak Hill. She earned a B.A. studying business, human resources and psychology from George Washington University. She also holds a Diploma of Bible Studies from Capital Baptist Bible Institute in Annandale. Mrs. Hickman loves horses and is an experienced trainer.
Claudia Key has taught at Oak Hill since 2005. She also directs the Oak Hill Vocal Ensemble. She and her husband, Bobby, have four children who all attend OHCS. She has a beautiful voice that rings through the hallway each morning as she leads her class in an opening song.
Caroline Murphy has been with OHCS since 1998. She and her husband, Robert, have two sons who are Oak Hill alumni. She has a passion for teaching geography and loves animals, especially reptiles. When she was six years old her mother told her, “God has given you the gift of teaching.”
Nancy Weathers has taught children for over fifteen years. She is married to Edwin and has two daughters and a son. At her leisure she enjoys helping with fundraising and spending time with her grandson. She has a genuine love for teaching young children.
